as a Composer

Messengers and Providers
In December of 2006 I gave a hybrid performance/composition recital to showcase new material I had written for small jazz ensemble.  This piece is something of a tribute to Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers.

Elegy
Elegy is a chamber jazz piece for horns, string quartet, and Latin percussion.  Also premiered at my senior recital, December 2006.

We Will Travel Someday
This is my first ever work for big band, and I hope to write many more. WWTS is a suite in three parts: the promise, the fantasy, the return, and is inspired by the works of Michel Camilo and Michael Abene. It was premiered by the UNC Jazz Band on April 19th, 2005.

Watermelon Girl
This is a more recent work I wrote for Steve Anderson's jazz composition and arranging class in the spring of 2006.  Received Honorable Mention in the 2007 ASCAP Foundation Young Jazz Composer Awards.

Share
From Puppets and Shadows (book and lyrics by Dana Dobreva).  This is the first number for Ouna, a forest dweller.  Here performed at my senior recital by Katie Curtis.

Last Cigarette
From Puppets and Shadows.  This version of Last Cigarette was performed by Louise Brock at my senior recital, backed by a jazz trio and string quartet.  In this song Elsa, the coffee shop owner, sings a ballad she wrote to a crowd with a very special person in the audience...

Lamb of God
From The Chapel Hill Mass, commissioned by the Newman Catholic Student Center Parish, here performed by the Newman Center choir at my senior recital.  The English translation of the Agnus Dei by the International Consultation on English Texts.

Old Folks
An extended, introspective take on one of my favorite ballads by Willard Robison.

I've Never Been In Love Before
A swingin' trio arrangement of Frank Loesser's great tune.

Tenderly
A rendition of Lawrence and Gross' lovely standard with Catherine Cheng, vocalist.

as a Keyboardist

Spades to Shovels
Written and recorded by Bazungu. on their EP Now With a Dot. Bazungu. is Jeff Fowler (guitar and vocals), myself (Rhodes, Clavinet, analog synths, percussion), Kirk Bryson (bass) and Rudy Curatolo (drums).

as a Producer

Blinds
This is a single off of Full of Stars' self-titled debut album. I am responsible for the drum programming, the virtual string orchestration, the mix: everything that isn't Jeff Fowler's lovely vocals and guitar.

More and More
An interview I conducted for an oral traditions class serves as the inspiration and thematic material for this Newgrass instrumental which I produced for the Full of Stars album. It features Jeff Fowler (guitar), Joe Troop (fiddle), Josie Abernethy (vocal samples), and myself (sampled prepared piano, percussion).
